Getting Beat Up by The 30 Day Shred

On Saturday, D and I decided that we would get back to the gym after several weeks off and one week of vacation in the middle. I had been feeling out of shape due to all of the recent down time and D hasn’t really been to the gym in several months. Well, Saturday morning came and it was 31 degrees outside. Neither of us wanted to step foot outside, and to get to the gym, we would have needed to walk outside for a good 5 minutes.

I suggested doing a DVD instead, and had the bright idea to give the 30 Day Shred DVD a try for the first time. I’ve had it on my shelf for at least a year or two but hadn’t gotten around to giving it a try up to that point. I knew it would be a hardcore workout and hopefully a good substitute for actually going to a gym.

There is no doubt about it: we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into!

In case you haven’t had the torture pleasure of trying it yourself, the DVD begins with a warm-up and then goes through 3 circuits of 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio, 1 minute of abs. We got about 1.5 minutes into the first strength section and we both felt like we were going to pass out. Needless to say, we took lots of breaks and drank lots of water.

We persevered through exactly the first half of the video before calling it quits. My legs were like rubber at that point and would not stop shaking. The crazy thing is, I do go to the gym pretty regularly, but I really never do certain types of exercises – squats and lunges included. And those exercises happened to be the 30 Day Shred’s specialty!

I felt good that we really pushed ourselves, but man, my legs were not the same for many days after the fact, and in fact I think yesterday was the first day I could walk without pain.

So now, D and I have a big challenge that we can work toward: finishing an entire session of level 1 on the DVD. And then after that, successfully doing it for 30 days! Can we do it? I feel optimistic and based on the intensity of the workout, I can’t imagine getting through the 30 days and not seeing muscle.

Have you done the 30 Day Shred before? Did it beat you up too?

  1. I remember when I first bought the dvd a few yers back, it killed me every single time. This past month, I did it for about three days in a row and I was SO proud of myself that I kept up with it and wasn’t terribly winded afterward. It makes you feel like such a rockstar! I definitely need to get back into it though because i’ve taken about a two week break from working out since I ran a half-marathon, hah! I would recommend RIpped in 30, I like it a lot better than 30day shred and it has FOUR workouts.

  2. Sounds like you were not used to doing interval training which is very tough to say the least for most people. Especially if you didn’t workout much before. The good thing is though that it works you just have to eat well and be prepared to be sore the next day.
