As I mentioned in my new year’s resolutions and again during the check-in I did on my goals a few weeks back, I’m planning to (hopefully) buy a house this year. It’s a super scary goal, and of course it could still not happen, but I’d really like to be done with renting for a multitude of reasons, and I’m in a place in my life where I can afford the cost financially. But none of that makes the process seem any less overwhelming!
I feel like I need an advisor or a class on this whole process to make sure I don’t mess anything up. There are so many things to do to prepare and it’s hard to even know where to start. Of course, I’ve been an avid fan of House Hunters for years and years, along with all of the other real estate shows out there, so I have some idea of what goes into all of this.
In the next few weeks, we’re going to get a mortgage preapproval from the bank and once I know how much money we can spend, we’re going to start taking a look at houses.
One of the things that makes me a little concerned about house hunting is that you don’t get much for your money where I live. I know there are worst places for real estate value, but Massachusetts isn’t exactly a bargain. Also, a good deal of the houses around here are quite old, and that’s not something I want to get involved with. (Side note: the house I grew up in and that my parents still reside was built in the 1800s.)
Even despite the worries, I’m extremely excited about the prospect of finally having property of my own and no longer being subject to the many downfalls of renting. I have dreams of a big kitchen and sizable dining room where I can host family get-togethers, and some actual outdoor space. I’d love to grow some herbs and vegetables! Not to mention, the prospect of having a garage almost seems to good to be true (No more digging out my car after a blizzard? I can’t even fathom it.)
What would your dream house look like?
What’s your favorite house hunting show (or do you find them boring)?
