BoxyCharm | September 2016

by Lisa on Saturday: Oct 01, 2016

Spoiler alert: I have one thing to say about the September BoxyCharm…

It was the best box ever!

BoxyCharm September - Contents

This month’s theme was “Camp Glam” and included some amazing products that I will be using regularly from now on. BoxyCharm has always been my favorite beauty subscription box, and this month really proves why.

As always, I am not sponsored by/affilated with BoxyCharm in any way.

BoxyCharm September - Hairgurt and Butter Nail Polish

Project Beauty Hairgurt Smoothing Yogurt Hair Masque
We’re starting off with a giant hit right here (and it’s not even the biggest hit in this box!). I gave this a shot in the shower the day I opened this box. I used it in place of conditioner and crossed my fingers that I wouldn’t regret skipping that step (my hair would be unbrushable without conditioner of some kind in it). Well, I didn’t have anything to worry about because this transformed my hair into something so smooth and soft I barely recognized it. This may have to become a staple for me in my hair care routine.

butterLONDON Trend Nail Lacquer
I’ve never tried butterLONDON nail polishes before, but I have heard that the formula is very high quality, and the price tag matches this claim. This is a nice fall color that I will try out as soon as I’m ready to take off the polish I’m currently wearing. I’m excited to finally give this brand a try!

BoxyCharm September - Lipstick and Eyeliner

Hikari Cosmetics Eye Liner
I haven’t cracked this eye liner open just yet because I have such a large backlog of eyeliners to get through. I am always happy to have backups of the things I use regularly, so this will be well used once I get to it.

PUR Cosmetics Lip Lure
This is the only product in the box that I have some doubts about. As I mentioned in last month’s review, dark lip colors aren’t really my thing, but this one seems like it might be more wearable if applied with a light hand. Will I ever reach for it? That remains to be seen.

BoxyCharm September - Palette

Studio Makeup “On-The-Go” Palette
We’re both starting and ending this review with a bang. This is the absolute star of the box.

BoxyCharm September - Palette Colors

BoxyCharm has included several palettes in the past, and while they were good, they were never of the “OMG I love it” variety. Well, this one is. The formula is so creamy and blendable. I was able to do a really nice look with it without much hassle (and I’m definitely not an expert when it comes to applying eye shadow). This is now my go-to everyday palette! I just can’t put it down.

If you’re looking for a high quality beauty subscription box to try out, BoxyCharm has my vote as #1, even over Sephora. It’s my favorite package to get in the mail every month!

April BoxyChrarm Review

by Lisa on Tuesday: Apr 26, 2016

As usual, I’m always very excited to see BoxyCharm arrive in my mailbox. This month’s contents were very fun, and I can see myself using pretty much everything in the box – a rarity for any subscription! Here’s what I got this month:

BoxyCharm April - Contents

As always, this post is not sponsored.

BoxyCharm April - lotion and mascara

Anderson Lilley Manhattan Beach Hand Cream
The great thing about this hand cream is that it absorbs into the skin very quickly. This means that I will actually use it. If there’s one thing that really gets on my nerves it’s when I use a hand cream and my hands feel greasy for a long while after. The scent was pretty light, and my hands did feel very smooth after using it.

Blinc Cosmetics Black Lash Primer
I’ve received products from Blinc Cosmetics before, and I haven’t been a fan of their mascaras, due to the odd nature of the products – instead of a traditional mascara formula, they form “tubes” around your lashes which have to be taken off in a specific way. I was wary of this product for that reason, but this primer is not the type that forms tubes. Though this is a primer, it could actually be used as a mascara thanks to its black color. Because of the more traditional formula, I will be using this again.

BoxyCharm April - lipstick and lip balm

Ofra Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Pasadena
I’m not too big on lip products, but I’ve been trying to incorporate them more into my beauty routine lately. This one was a huge win. The color is nice, it goes on easily, and I love that as a liquid lipstick it dries after you put it on and doesn’t feel like you’re wearing anything. Also as a bonus, the color goes well with my skin tone, which is rare to find.

Pur-Lisse Lip Comfort with Mango and Shea Butter
I love this lip balm! The smell/taste of mango is amazing and it makes my lips feel soft. It’s a great change-up to my usual plain-old Chapstick routine.

BoxyCharm April - Your Minerals top

BoxyCharm April - Your Minerals bottom

Your Minerals Eye Shadow in Brown Hypnotic
This was the product I was most excited about when I opened the box. It’s very shimmery and complex. I tried it on its own and it was slightly too dark for me, but when paired with a few different eye colors, it works great. I’m happy to have this as an addition to my collection.

I can’t wait to keep using these products and to experiment with some additional looks using the eye shadow. I’m happy to add all of these products to my collection.

Play! by Sephora March Review

by Lisa on Saturday: Apr 02, 2016

The “Perfection Collection” is the theme of March’s Play! by Sephora box. I’d say that accurately sums up the types of products included here, as many of them aim to give you a flawless, airbrushed look.

Play by Sephora - March

Here’s a look at what came in this month’s box and my first impressions of each of the products:

Play by Sephora - Murad and Tattoo Eyeliner

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30

I’ve used many primer-type products over the last few months, and aside from helping my makeup go on smoother, none really did anything additional. This one, however, was a different story. It took my makeup up a notch and gave my face a smooth, glowing texture. It was a noticeable difference!

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper

I struggled applying this eyeliner a little bit upon a first attempt. It’s possible that I just need more practice with these liquid style liners, but the line was too thin and I had to go over it a lot. Plus it was hard for me to get the line to look straight.

Color IQ empty container

This confused me for a while. At first, I thought they had put an empty container in my box by mistake, and a cursory flip through the info book didn’t tell me what to do with it. It wasn’t until I was reading more thoroughly through the book for this blog post that I found out that this was intentional. They included this cute little empty container with the intention that you are to bring this to your local Sephora for a Color IQ sample, which will be placed inside. I suppose this is one of the more “interactive” elements of their boxes that they’re always talking about.

Play by Sephora - Replica Perfume and Smashbox Primer

Maison Martin Margiela ‘Replica’ Beach Walk

This perfume sample was possibly the biggest surprise of the whole box – I absolutely loved it! It is a rare occasion for me to find a perfume that is not only light enough for me to wear all day (many give me headaches and I also work in an office environment and don’t want my perfume to overwhelm my neighbors), but that also smells so incredible I keep going back for more. I may have to actually look into buying this one in a full size.

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Oil

This is the second primer included in the box, but I have to say I liked the Murad much more. I wasn’t a big fan of using an oil as a primer, and I didn’t notice that it made my makeup look any nicer.

Play by Sephora - Blender and Cleanser

Sephora Collection The Perfectionist: Airbrush Sponge

I don’t have a Beauty Blender in my collection, nor have I ever used one, but this seems like it is Sephora’s answer to that product. I tried it to blend my concealer and highlighter today, but it didn’t really do what I wanted. It seemed like it was taking away the concealer instead of blending it, and I’m so used to using my fingers to blend that area that I didn’t like the change of pace. It seems like a good sponge, but I’m not sure I’m a blender person.

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser

I didn’t really end up liking this cleanser. It had a strange smell to it, and it was a little too creamy for me for a face wash. I don’t feel like it cleaned my face as well as my usual cleanser.

Overall, there were more misses than hits in this box, but the fun for me is still in trying new products and becoming more educated on makeup and beauty every month. Plus, the hits in this box were actually very big hits with me and are products that I may consider buying after I finish the samples.

Favorite perfume of the moment?

BoxyCharm February Box Review

by Lisa on Tuesday: Mar 08, 2016

I’ve been a subscriber of BoxyCharm for nearly a year now. It was my first subscription box, and it continues to be my favorite.

BoxyCharm February - Rush to Relax

The February box arrived recently, and I thought I would share its contents with you.

BoxyCharm February Contents

This is not a sponsored post. As always, I purchase this box myself.

BoxyCharm Banana Powder and Face Mask

Ofra Banana Powder Godet
I have some mixed feelings about this powder. I’ve been using it to set my under eye concealer and it seems to do a good job. However, it doesn’t come in a traditional container. It’s just a pot on its own, and they’re expecting you to pop it into one of those magnetic z-palettes. I don’t have one of those and don’t anticipate that I will ever have a need for one, so I just keep it in its little plastic envelope. It makes it a little annoying to use, but it’s not that big of a deal.

Shray Ms. Amazing Facial Mask
The packaging for this mask was very cute and creative. It came in an envelope that looks like a postcard and unfolds to reveal the product. I did have some trouble unfolding the mask itself. It was so wet and stuck together that it took me a considerable amount of time to be able to separate the layers. The mask was refreshing and moisturizing once I figured that part out.

BoxyCharm Perfume and Spongelle

Realtree for Her
This is a nice rosy, flowery perfume. It’s not too overpowering, but it did seem to be lacking in staying power. I put it on one morning and by the time I arrived at work, I couldn’t smell it anymore.

Spongelle You Have My Heart on A String
This is such a cute product! It has soap built into it, and the heart shape was very appropriate for Valentine’s day. I’m waiting to use this until I’m ready to switch out my current loofah.

BoxyCharm Highlighter and Eye Serum

Beauty for Real Blush and Glow Stick
This is a dual-sided applicator – one side is blush and the other is highlighter. This blush is definitely not my shade. I gave it a shot one morning before work and I felt like I was applying clown makeup on my face. I had to remove it immediately. The highlighter side of it is much more subtle and seems to have a little bit of bronze in it. Even though I won’t use the blush, I can see using the highlighter every now and then

Freeze 24/7 Anti-Aging Eye Serum
This is probably my most-used product in the box. For an eye product, it has a bit of an unexpected consistency, as it is more of a gel than a cream. I’ve been using it at night, and I feel like it does make a good bit of difference on my dark circles.

Even though not every product got a rave review from me, I’m still very happy with this box, and I find it very fun to try out so many new things that I otherwise would never come across. And to me it’s worth it if I can find a handful of items in each box that really work well.

Play! by Sephora February Review

by Lisa on Wednesday: Mar 02, 2016

The February Play! by Sephora box arrived in my mailbox recently, and I’m continuing to enjoy this subscription. I’m always excited to see what they’re going to send out, and I feel like this subscription continues to be worth much more than the $10 they charge.

Sephora Play Now and Later

As always, I subscribe to this box on my own with my own money. This post is not sponsored. I just thought it would be fun to share.

Sephora Play February Contents

Here’s what I received this month:

Sephora Play Tom Ford, Bare Minerals

Tom Ford Black Orchid
It’s funny that this perfume sample arrived this month, because I have recently seen multiple YouTube videos in which people have been raving about this scent. I tried it over the weekend, applying it only to my wrists, and I liked it a lot! It was on the strong side, but my light application helped, and I did like it even more after it mellowed on my skin.

Bare Minerals Pop of Passion Lip Oil-Balm in Plumberry Pop
I’m not a huge lipstick person, mostly because I feel like any color I try is a stark contrast to my pale skin and ends up looking a little bit too intense. This color was pretty bright on me (no surprise there), but if I ever feel like being bold, I could see reaching for this. The formula was very smooth and easy to apply.

Sephora Play Eyeliner and Lipstick

Lancome Drama Liqui-Pencil Longwear Eyeliner in Noir Intense
As I’ve mentioned many times, I love getting wearable black eyeliners in my subscription boxes. I much prefer these over crazy color that will just sit around and never get used. This pencil is great – it sharpens very smoothly and you don’t have to worry about pencil “shards” near your eyes, like I have to with some of my cheaper eyeliners. It applies very easily and I like how my eyes look when using it. This is a keeper.

Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Natural in N9 Copper Pink
Unlike the Bare Minerals color, this one is much more neutral on me and a color I would consider wearing more frequently. Although, as I mentioned that I’m not a huge lipstick person, I would have preferred not to receive 2 lipsticks in one box.

Sephora Play Dry Shampoo and Tarte Mascara

Bumble and Bumble Pret-a-Powder
This is a dry shampoo type of product, but unlike most others that come in a hairspray style canister, this one is loose powder that you shake out of the container. This concept was a little odd at first and reminded me of the days when I was in middle school/high school and used straight-up baby powder in my hair when it got greasy. However, this powder worked in really easily, smelled nice and actually did seem to make a difference.

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara
Tarte has been one of my favorite makeup brands since I started experimenting with higher end products last year. I’ve used several of their mascaras before and have loved the ones I’ve tried. This one was new to me, but it was another quality product. It made my lashes look full and long, and I know I will enjoy using the rest of this sample.
